Weeding Out the Truth - Campaign Initiative Focuses on Marijuana

The fall edition of the UPDATE publication from ONDCP’s National Media Campaign, bears the headline “Weeding Out the Truth - Campaign Initiative Focuses on Marijuana.” It states about the campaign: “The Campaign message is that marijuana puts kids at risk. It’s harmful to young bodies and imnds that are still developing. Marijuana affects the brain and can impair mental health, leading to increased depression and anxiety.”
While most of us in prevention would like to have seen that last sentence include the facts that marijuana is addictive, carcinogenic and cytotoxic to sperm and egg cells, this is an important starting place. Use of marijuana is usually the first step over the line into further drug use, crime and violence. Parents, educators and those in law enforcement are well aware that when minor infractions are not addressed, they quickly escalate into major infractions and typically incite those around it to mimic that behavior. Thus, preventing and stopping marijuana use is of primary importance in abating the world’s drug problems.
